I came across the term elevator pitch in one of my recent training sessions and it brought back all the memories of how I dreaded the question “So tell me something about yourself” as a fresher. You get only one chance to make the first impression and for that, a well-rehearsed elevator pitch is what you need. So, for starters,

What is an elevator pitch?

As the name suggests, elevator pitch allows you to imagine getting into an elevator on the ground floor, meeting a potential client, and having 60 seconds to tell them who you are, what you do, why you do it, and how it can help them.

Elevator pitch is usually used by start-ups to get investors but it can also be used by someone as a promotion pitch, in a job interview, or as a good conversation starter on a first date. The key is to tweak your pitch a little here and there depending on the audience. A good elevator generates curiosity in the listener to know more and ask questions.

Let’s together create an elevator pitch step by step:

Step 1: Who are you and what do you do: I am Alice, an assistant product manager by day and a podcast host of “WITea: Women in Tech” by night where I interview women from the tech industry. I have recently launched my consultancy services to help women-led start-ups plan and scale up their products.

Step 2: What is your why, what motivates you: I am on a mission to bring more women in tech.

Step 3: Include a call to action, what do you expect from this introduction: I can help you plan your roadmap, save on integration costs by choosing the services that suit you. I would love to set up a call next week and discuss the details further.

Some quick add-on tips:

· Put the time into research and familiarizing yourself with the client to customize the pitch.

· Prepare and rehearse the pitch a few times in advance.

· Have a positive mindset, think you already have a yes to feel more confident.

Writing always helps you structure your scattered thoughts and a well-written, crisp elevator pitch helps you climb an extra floor towards your goal. So, what are you waiting for, write and share your elevator pitch with us in the comment section?
